Arshdeep Breaks Stumps!

Punjab Kings 214 for 8 (Curran 55, Bhatia 41, Chawla 2-15) beat Mumbai Indians 210 for 6 (Green 67, Suryakumar 57, Arshdeep 4-29) by 13 runs

Punjab Kings’ innings seemed to be meandering without much momentum as they reached 105 for 4 after 14 overs, with Harpreet Singh Bhatia and Sam Curran struggling to accelerate. However, what followed in the next six overs was a spectacular onslaught, turning the tide in their favor. Bhatia’s gritty 41 off 28, Curran’s explosive 55 off 29, and Jitesh Sharma’s breathtaking 25 off just seven deliveries powered Kings to an imposing total of 214 for 8.

In response, Mumbai Indians remained competitive throughout the chase, thanks to Rohit Sharma’s brisk 44 off 27 balls and Cameron Green’s impressive 67 off 43. Suryakumar Yadav’s aggressive half-century threatened to snatch victory from Kings’ grasp. But it was the young pacer Arshdeep Singh who stepped up at a crucial juncture. He crucially dismissed Suryakumar in the 18th over and then demonstrated nerves of steel in the final over, conceding only two runs while dismantling the stumps of Tilak Varma and Nehal Wadhera with consecutive deliveries.

The thrilling 13-run victory propelled Kings to the fifth position in the standings with eight points from seven games. Remarkably, the top five teams in the table are all level on eight points, with net run rate being the sole differentiator.

Cameron Green started the 16th over with a boundary and a six against Nathan Ellis, Kings’ Impact Player, but the bowler had him miscuing a cleverly disguised slower delivery, and Curran completed the catch near extra cover.

Despite the wicket, Mumbai continued to stay in contention. In fact, Suryakumar’s aggressive stroke play, including a six and a four off Curran in the 17th over, momentarily put Mumbai ahead in the chase. With 40 runs needed from the final three overs, Tim David struck a six off Arshdeep’s first ball, but the bowler showed tremendous composure, conceding only three runs from the remaining deliveries. Arshdeep’s crucial over also accounted for the dismissal of Suryakumar, who flicked a low full toss to Atharva Taide at midwicket.

Tim David tried to single-handedly pull off a miraculous win for Mumbai, smashing a 114-meter six off Ellis in the penultimate over. However, apart from that one massive hit, he struggled to find the middle of the bat. In the final over, he managed only a single on Arshdeep’s first ball and remained a mere spectator while witnessing a masterful display of death bowling.

Earlier in the innings, Bhatia and Curran consolidated cautiously, adding only 22 runs in the subsequent four overs. But then came the game-changing acceleration. Hrithik Shokeen’s expensive 15th over proved ominous for Mumbai. Despite Chawla’s economical figures of 2 for 15 from three overs, Rohit surprisingly persisted with Tendulkar. The decision backfired as Curran and Bhatia hammered four fours and two sixes off Tendulkar’s over, accumulating a staggering 31 runs, which also included a wide and a beamer.

Two overs later, Cameron Green suffered the same fate. Curran launched him for two consecutive sixes, and although Green dismissed Bhatia, Jitesh Sharma had no intention of slowing down. Jitesh smashed two more sixes off Green’s over, adding 25 crucial runs.

Curran reached his fifty in just 26 balls with a boundary off Archer before losing his wicket in the same over. However, Jitesh continued to dazzle, hitting two more sixes in the final over bowled by Behrendorff, propelling Punjab Kings to what eventually proved to be the match-winning total.
